Domestic and Gun Violence Campaign

FirearmFreeZone

Since January 1, 2023, people in Alabama can carry handguns in public, openly or concealed, without a permit (Code of Ala. section 13A-11-85(a)). However, owners of private businesses or property still have the right to choose to prohibit guns from being carried on their private property.

Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense in America and Sophia’s Giving Hands Foundation, are sponsoring an initiative to offer FREE signs to businesses that can be used to advise gun carrying patrons that the privately owned business does not consent to the presence of firearms on premises. We are informing businesses and private property owners about their rights so that, should they choose, they can post signs to ensure that firearms are not being carried on their property. This initiative is in honor of Sophia Zeigler, a young woman who was shot and killed at a convenience store in Hoover, Alabama in 2022.

We have had an excellent and enthusiastic response from businesses contacted so far!  One volunteer ordered 20 signs and gave them all out in two days!  She just entered the store and asked to talk to the manager.  A wide variety of businesses accepted signs, including a craft store, shoe store, gas station, clothing store, and local restaurant. Only one business declined a sign.
